Solo founders & indie revenue

"Solo founder, $189K profit." Then Wix paid $80M and counted eight employees.

On June 4, 2025 Maor Shlomo posted that Base44, his AI app builder, had cleared $189,000 in profit in May, nearly double his own forecast. Two weeks later TechCrunch reported that Wix was buying it for $80 million in cash. The profit figure appears only in Shlomo's own posts, relayed by TechCrunch and Calcalist, with no filing behind it. The other word has a harder time: Wix confirmed eight employees, who split a $25 million retention bonus. The number may well be real. "Solo" is doing a lot of work.

Base44 ended up making $189K profit in May, not $100K as expected.
Insufficient evidenceVersion 1 · Model qwen-max · verdict_v1 · solo-founder@2 · 2026-09-23 06:15

The claim that Maor Shlomo, the founder of Base44, reported a $189K profit in May 2025, nearly double his forecast, is supported only by self-reported statements. There is no independent verification of the profit figure, and the sources that mention the profit are either reprints or based on Shlomo's own statements. Additionally, the claim that Base44 was a solo operation is contradicted by the evidence that Shlomo had eight employees. The interested-party cap applies, and the level cannot be higher than 'insufficient'.

Discounted

  • techcrunch.com: This evidence suggests that Maor Shlomo was not truly a solo founder, as he had eight employees. However, this does not directly contradict the profit claim, but it does cast doubt on the 'solo' aspect.
  • www.sec.gov: This evidence is about the acquisition of Base44 by Wix and does not provide any information about the profit claim.

What would change this

  • Independent financial records or third-party audits verifying the $189K profit in May 2025.
  • More details on the cost structure and how the profit was calculated, including LLM token costs and other expenses.
